Overview

5Bet is a crypto online casino — fast, visual and designed to bring the energy of a casino floor into the browser. I was the main UX designer from day one, when there was no product, established UX direction or design system, through research, design and launch.

Shipping was only half the job. Once the product went live, the work shifted towards understanding real player behaviour and continuously improving the experience.

From zero to a live product

Starting from nothing — Joined 5Bet at the very beginning, when the product, visual language and UX direction were still being defined. Working closely with the Brand & Visual Designer, I helped shape the initial product direction, visual language and experience principles.

Understanding the domain — Immersed myself in the online casino and crypto-gambling space to understand its business models, user behaviours, competitive landscape and constraints. Combined competitive benchmarking, design thinking and user research to identify opportunities and inform the product strategy.

Defining the MVP — Translated research and business requirements into a focused MVP, prioritising the journeys that needed to work from day one. Mapped the core experience across discovery, registration, deposits, gameplay, withdrawals and account management before moving into detailed UI.

From wireframes to production — Designed and iterated the experience from information architecture and early wireframes through interaction design and final UI. Worked closely with the Brand & Visual Designer to balance a distinctive casino identity with clarity, usability and trust.

Building the foundation — Established the design system from scratch, creating reusable foundations, components and patterns that allowed a small team to move quickly without compromising consistency.

Optimising the live product — Continued the design process beyond launch using analytics, funnels, navigation paths, heatmaps and behavioural data to understand where users succeeded, dropped off or encountered friction. Used these insights to iterate on key journeys and interfaces based on observed behaviour rather than assumptions.

End-to-end ownership — Covered the full product design cycle — from domain discovery and product strategy through research, UX, UI and design systems to post-launch analysis and optimisation. The role went beyond designing individual screens: I was involved in shaping how the product worked as a whole.

The design system

Built the design system from the ground up as a documented, scalable foundation for the product. Rather than treating it as a collection of UI components, I structured it around established Atomic Design principles, creating a clear hierarchy from foundational variables and tokens through reusable components and larger patterns.

Everything is documented and connected through Figma Variables, covering colour, spacing, typography and other core foundations. Components use reusable properties and variants to support different states and use cases while keeping the interface consistent.

The goal was more than visual consistency — the system created a shared foundation that made the product faster to design, easier to maintain and more resilient as new features and flows were introduced.

What came after launch

Shipping 5Bet didn’t end my involvement — it changed the nature of the work. Once real players were using the product, the focus shifted from designing expected behaviour to understanding actual behaviour.

Click-through and navigation analysis — Compared intended journeys with real navigation paths to identify where players dropped off, looped back or encountered friction.

Conversion optimisation — Analysed key journeys across sign-up, deposit and gameplay to identify opportunities to reduce friction and improve progression through the funnel.

Talking to players — Interviewed active users to understand the context behind behavioural data and uncover problems that quantitative data alone could not explain.

Session recordings — Reviewed real session recordings to identify hesitation, confusion and interaction patterns that were difficult to capture through funnels and heatmaps alone.

Owning it end to end

Being one of only two people shaping 5Bet meant that design decisions had a direct impact on the product. I worked across strategy, UX, UI, brand collaboration and optimisation — often moving between high-level product decisions and the details of the final interface.

That level of ownership shaped my approach: move quickly, make deliberate decisions, and balance visual excitement with usability and trust in a category where all three matter.

Reflection

Launch wasn’t the finish line. The same process that took 5Bet from an idea to a live product continued after release — now informed by real users, real behaviour and real product data.

The result was not simply a polished interface, but a product that could evolve based on evidence rather than assumptions.
